Darlington County deputies have reportedly located an improvised explosive device while executing a search warrant and a man has been arrested.
Deputies are responding to a residence in the 2100 block of N. 5th St. where an IED was reportedly found during the search warrant, according to a press release from the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.
“Deputies with the Special Incident Response Team executed a search warrant for an individual and evidence related to a crime this afternoon,” Sheriff Tony Chavis stated in the release. “The suspect was taken into custody, and early into the search an object wrapped in electrical tape with a fuse was located.”
Officials from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are on scene helping with the collection and disposal of the device.
Lt. Robert Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office says the device has been “deconstructed.”
David Matthew Sheffield, 36, of Hartsville, was arrested and taken to the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center. Sheffield is currently charged with kidnapping, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and receiving stolen goods.
The sheriff’s office says more charges are expected.
