DARLINGTON (WBTW) – Darlington County Council this week approved a new $33.2 million budget for the next fiscal year, and it includes more money than originally planned for the county’s animal shelter.

County Administrator Terence Arrington said council approved the plan to give the shelter $148.350 in the budget, up from $100,350.

This move came after a group of representatives from the Humane Society held a gathering at the county courthouse and demanded better support.  Members of the group told News13 that the shelter was stretched so thin that it was using a lot of the money its supporters gather through fundraising and donations to pay for office supplies, record keeping, and other expenses not related directly to the care of its animals.
