DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – A former Darlington County Detention Center employee was arrested after being investigated by SLED at the request of the sheriff’s office earlier this month.
Lt. Robby Kilgo with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office says Sheriff Tony Chavis requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigate an incident that occurred at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center Feb. 4.
Agents with SLED arrested and charged Demarcus Deante Cooks, 27, with misconduct in office, Lt. Kilgo confirms.
SLED officials confirm Cooks was arrested in connection with an incident in which two inmates were assaulted. Cooks’ arrest warrant states he unlocked the cell door of two inmates, allowed three other inmates to enter the cell and assault the two inmates and failed to intervene in the fight. The warrant goes on to state Cooks did not offer or provide medical heal to the victims.
Cooks did not report the fight to the proper authorities, SLED claims.
Cooks is no longer employed with the detention center and is expected to appear before a Darlington County Magistrate Thursday.
