MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Sammy Truett of Moore & Associates Insurance joined News13 Now on Thursday at 9 a.m. to talk about insurance questions following Hurricane Matthew. Watch the video to learn more.

One thing Truett mentioned that many insurance policy holders don’t realize is that their police has a “named storm” deductible. Often that means that if there is damage from a named storm such as Matthew, the deductible on the policy becomes a percentage of the property’s value. That often increases the cost of the deductible. So reviewing you policy may help you avoid surprises.

In the event you have damage from a storm, the following can hep you handle the insurance process.

  1. Take pictures of the damage.
  2. Get the Declaration Page of your insurance policy, confirm your deductible.
  3. Compare deductible to cost of damage. (Please note that sometimes the deductible is a percentage (2-5%) of the amount that you are insured for. For example, if your home is insured for $100,000 and you have a 5% deductible, your deductible would be $5000. Based on your deductible and the amount of damage sustained, you may opt not to file a claim.)
  4. Contact insurance agent. Call the 800 number on the policy to get the claim started.
