SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Crews combed through an area around the Surfside Beach Pier Wednesday, collecting bits and pieces of the iconic town landmark destroyed by Hurricane Matthew.
Surfside Beach Mayor Bob Childs says the storm ripped off about 50 feet of the pier and sent it into the ocean. Much of the damage washed ashore and could be seen scattered in the town’s sand dunes in the days following the hurricane.
Childs told News13 an engineer has surveyed the damage and assessed the pier. Right now, town leaders are waiting for a report detailing the damage. That information will help them decide the best course of action to repair the battered landmark.
On Wednesday, both the pier’s restaurant and tackle shop opened back up to the public. Access to the actual pier, however, has been blocked.
Town leaders say there’s no timeline at the moment on when the pier will be either repaired or rebuilt.
