MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) — The trend of adult coloring seems to be growing in popularity. Evany Sneed, Craftologist with A.C. Moore, was on News 13 Now to talk about the growth and explain some of the benefits. Watch the video for all the details, but below are a few of the highlights from her interview:
- Coloring has calming effect on our bodies
- According to Marygrace Barbarian, Clinical Asst. Professor and Graduate of the Art Therapy Program at NYU, “Engaging in art processes can be incredibly therapeutic and cathartic for many people.” Coloring can help with PTSD, anxiety, stress and high blood pressure.
- Coloring is another method of practicing mindfulness
- According to Dr. Ben Michaelis, Clinical Psychologist, coloring is an activity that slows down your breathing, slows down your things and allows people to really let go of a lot of anxiety, helping push their minds into the future.
- Coloring stimulates the left and right hemispheres of the brain
- According to Dr. Michaelis, when coloring, there’s activity in the parietal lobe, which is the part of the brain that’s connected to spirituality and calm. Additionally, research has shown that when coloring, there’s lower activity in the fear centers of the brain (the hypothalamus).
- Coloring invokes nostalgia
- Coloring as an adult often reminds us of our childhood, a much simpler time where we had less worries than we do as adults.
- Coloring is restorative
- Coloring is helping people restore their creative origins.
