Court scam email uses scare tactics to get your information

By Diane Lee (WSPA)

A scam notice saying you have to appear in court could put your computer and personal information at risk. The bogus email even copies the logos of famous law firms to look more legitimate.

We showed Arious Page, who says her inbox is always filled with scam emails.

“Honestly that probably would have been one that I would have read, just considering it did have a law firm on there. I probably would have clicked on it and then next thing you know they have all my information,” said Page.

Consumer Lawyer Andrew Hart says knowing how the law works can protect you.

“Someone has to either come out to your house and serve you or your family, or they’ll send you something by certified mail where you have to actually sign for it, that begins the case, and so in almost all cases there will not be a situation where you will get a notice by email that you have to show up for a hearing in a case that you didn’t know about in the first place,” said Hart.

You can also check for any current or prior court cases involving you on this government website. Under Trial Courts, click Case Record Search, find your county and run your name. It has all traffic, civil and criminal cases dating back more than a decade.

There is a case information link in the email, but of course, that one gives you nothing but a computer virus.
