CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County councilman Paul Prince said Wednesday the Horry County Sheriff’s Office and police department should be combined.
Prince spoke in the county’s public safety committee meeting. He said consolidation would help alleviate problems in both departments and allow citizens to elect an official to serve in a police role.
Other members of the committee said the county had tried to pass a similar consolidation before, but it didn’t work out.
Committee members said they’d be willing to take the issue before county council. They didn’t set a date for the discussion.
News13 previously reported on issues within the Horry County Police Department. SLED is investigating current and former officers, the department faces lawsuits from alleged rape victims, and the department is reviewing previously closed cases.
The Horry County Police Department is the only remaining county police department in the State of South Carolina.
