DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – Darlington police say they were called to Southern Pine Street Tuesday evening after a person was shot.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee was called to the scene to investigate and confirms one person is dead. Wednesday, Hardee identified the deceased as 19-year-old Tyrell McCain of Darlington.

Lt. Kimberly Nelson says around 4:18 p.m. officers arrived to find a male victim with a gunshot wound.

The incident remains under investigation by the Coroner and the Darlington City Police. The Coroner will make a ruling in the death in the coming days. At this time, foul play is not suspected.

A statement in reference to the shooting was released Wednesday on the police department’s Facebook page. The post says officers arrived to the scene very quickly and though several witnesses were taken from the scene, no one was arrested.Below is a portion of that statement:

“We are currently investigating this matter as an intentional shooting although there is a significant chance that it might not have been intentional. We are always reluctant to rush to judgment in any situation. Once a determination has been made of exactly what happened, as near as we can ascertain it, we will of course update the public. The most important thing we can do in any case is to make sure that we are acting correctly while serving both sides of the issue. All evidence gathered at the scene will be processed and accessed before any decision is reached. Should anyone have something they feel might be helpful to us in this matter we encourage you to come forward to speak with us about the matter. We are committed to making sure that if someone needs to be charged that they will be. If it turns out that no crime occurred we will hopefully gather such information to share with others in hopes that we can help to prevent something like this from happening again in the future. The loss of any life is very sad and the loss of such a young life is tragic. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young man who was lost as well as those who were affected by this event. We greatly appreciate the efforts of all of our patrol units, investigative units, traffic units, fire department and Darlington County EMS who did all they could to try to save this young man”
