MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Marlboro County’s top chefs fired up the grill for some friendly competition Father’s Day weekend.

Those participated are competing for the title of “Marlboro County Grill Master Supreme”.

Bennettsville native and journalist Art Fennell organized the event.

He says each chef participating in the event is a father and aside from bragging rights the cookout will benefit kids in the community.

“These are not professional chefs but each is a “Neighborhood Favorite” from Marlboro County.  Now, for the first time, they are competing in an organized format under the supervision of celebrity judges,” said Fennell.

Chris Hepburn is a chef at “Going Up In Smoke Grillin”, he competed in the cookout Saturday.

“Around here in this community we need a lot of positive things going on and this is one. And plus you know it’s helping give back to the kids. I have kids and you know they’re trying to go to college, so they might get some of the money. I’m happy to be here,” said Hepburn.

Proceeds from the competition will benefit local scholarship recipients.

Organizers say they plan to make this an annual event and grow it each year.
