CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Conway City Council is holding its first town hall meeting of 2017 and the Conway Police Department will be present.
The purpose of the town hall is for Conway residents to provide feedback on any issues of concern in the community.
The police department will be presenting tips on how to survive an active shooter situation, and how to react during a traffic stop. This comes amid recent, national events regarding distrust of officers and safety for the community.
“The main reason we want to do that clip and show that is to make everybody aware of not only safety for them, but safety for the officers as well,” says Conway Police Sgt. Darren Alston. “There are things we do to ensure our safety during a traffic stop, and of course there are things we want them to be aware of that would make them safe as well during a traffic stop.”
With either topic, the department feels a town hall is the best way to handle these subjects.
“It builds public trust and it builds a public safety camaraderie,” said Sgt. Alston. “Officers can explain why they do what they do, and the public can ask why we do what we do, and we’re able to explain to them in a town hall setting.”
The City of Conway holds town hall meetings quarterly, and the police department will soon hold training classes on the topics discussed at this town hall.
Sgt. Alston also mentioned with more vehicle break-ins lately, officers will address how to better protect yourself and your belongings against thieves.
The meeting takes place at the Conway Senior Center at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
