CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Conway city leaders met with people who live in the city for a town hall meeting Tuesday night at South Conway Elementary.
It’s one of several meetings city leaders have put together because they say the people are the eyes and ears of the community.
Bill Parrish lives off Sycamore Drive in Conway, and like many in the county, he’s worried those quiet days are changing.
“Heroin is a major problem in this community right now. You know, all kinds of stories you’re hearing about people putting their children, even their children in jeopardy, and that’s a sad story. You know, somebody got to do something,” said Parrish.
It’s a problem people like Danny Onley are scared of because with drugs comes crime.
Last month Horry County leaders released stats that showed a large majority of crimes in the county were in Conway and Socastee, with nearly half of the arrests being people under 25.
That’s why Onley says the city has to do something for the kids.
“Well, I want to see them have more things to do and stuff like that with their time, some activity For them to have and enjoy themselves besides getting in trouble and stuff like that,” said Onley.
It’s suggestions like that Conway city leaders want to hear because they say people who live there are the eyes and ears of the community.
“Everybody ought to stand up. You see something going on, report it. You know, stand up for your community. Make your community what you want your community to be,” said Parrish.
Conway City Administrator Bill Graham says these meetings give council an opportunity to hear what people want to see done in the community.
Some of those concerns include people wanting to see a bigger police presence in the area, more lighting in the streets, and drainage problems in their neighborhoods.
