Conway man charged with murder in deadly drive-by shooting

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Police confirm that an arrest has been made in the shooting Tuesday night that claimed the life of a Conway man.

Public Information Officer Krystal Dotson says officers were called to the drive -by shooting on Beau Street in Conway around 11:58 p.m. Tuesday. The incident report says when officers arrived on scene several people were standing outside the home “distraught, crying, and yelling” about the victim being shot.

Dotson confirms 19-year-old Richard Andrew Whidby, of Conway, is charged with murder, six counts of attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Online court records show Whidby had his initial court appearance Friday where bond was denied. Whidby is scheduled for his next court appearance in November, according to court records.

A police report related to the shooting says once inside the home, officers found one male victim laying on the floor bleeding badly from a gunshot wound, the report states. The bullet was shot through the front of the home, police say.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden identified the victim as Darryl Hunte, 48, of Conway.

Emergency crews were called to the home, but Hunte died at the scene, the report says.

Witnesses offered details regarding the suspect’s vehicle, and at this time, Whidby is the only person arrested in connection to the shooting, Dotson confirms. Officers have not revealed a motive for the shooting.
