CONWAY (WBTW) – The Conway Police Department arrested a man who they believe hit and killed a CCU student with his car early Saturday morning.
A Coastal Carolina University student was killed as he tried to walk across Highway 544.
Horry County Chief Deputy coroner, Tamara Willard says Ryan Bielawa, 19, of Averill Park, NY was crossing the highway near the Monarch apartments around 12: 40 p.m. when he was hit.
The Conway Police Department arrested and charged Edward Washington, 31, of Conway with Felony DUI and hit and run resulting in death. Washington was booked Saturday morning at Horry County Detention Center.
According to Lt. Darren Alston with the Conway Police Department released a statement saying Washington hit Bielawa with his car and drove off. Alston stated that Washington then came back to the scene a short time later where officers identified him and was arrested.
The crash is still under investigation by The Conway Police Department and The South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Team.
At last check, Washington remains at J.Reuben Long Detention center Sunday afternoon.
