Convicted sex offender arrested on NC middle school campus

BOLIVIA, NC (Press Release) – A Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office deputy, dedicated only to monitoring sex offenders in Brunswick County, arrested a Navassa man on the campus of Leland Middle School this morning.

Michael Pernell Wagner, 46, of Main Street, Navassa, is charged with felony sex offender on child premises. Wagner was dropping off the child of a friend. He is being held in the Brunswick County Detention Facility under a $11,000 bond.

Parnell was convicted in 2003 for 2nd degree rape and indecent liberties with a minor stemming from two separate incidents in 2000 and 2002. He was released from the NC Department of Corrections on 10/11/2014 after serving a sentence for those convictions.

Brunswick County School officials offer high praise for the quick work of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputy who made the arrest this morning.  
 
“We are appreciative that resources are in place to monitor the actions of sex offenders in our county. This provides an additional layer of security in our schools.  Thanks to the quick work of this deputy, the individual arrested this morning was apprehended in the parking lot of our school and never posed a threat to students or staff.” stated Interim Superintendent Les Tubb.
