RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN/WBTW) – People who tune into the Super Bowl this Sunday will see an advertisement for a contest to help people facing a common challenge: paying down student loan debt.
The ad for Natural Light will air in five media markets, including Raleigh, that include cities with the most student loan debt based on 2018 data from Lending Tree.
Raleigh ranked 4th in the country, with a median loan balance of $21,357. According to Lending Tree, about 23 percent of borrowers owe more than $50,000. The top three cities for student loan debt are: Washington, Atlanta, and Richmond, Virginia.
Riley Ledford, a student at N.C. State University, said when he factors in student loans for undergraduate and veterinary school, he estimates it’ll total more than $200,000.
“I have a twin sister who’s here as well, so it’s kind of pricey for two kids to go to college at the same time,” he said. “There are some programs in place that try to help, but still it’s no enough for most people to graduate debt-free.”
The ad that airs Sunday will feature previous contest winners who posted a video to social media explaining what inspired them to go to college with #NattyStories and #Contest. You have to be at least 21 to enter and include in the video a green dollar-sign tab from a can of Natural Light.
Among the people who enter, 70 will win a portion of the prize pool, which is more than $1 million. The contest runs through May 18.
