Conservation groups host interactive event to teach importance of local rivers

(WBTW) Dozens of people filled the Horry County Museum to learn about how local rivers support wildlife and our own communities.

The Winyah Rivers Foundation and Waccamaw Riverkeeper Program hosted their annual Waccamaw Conference on Saturday. The free, family-friendly event featured various speakers, exhibits, a student poster contest and even real live animals. Organizers wanted to teach the community how local waterways not only impact different facets of the ecosystem but also our everyday lives. They encouraged people to take part in their river and landing clean-up programs, and an upcoming stormwater education event. Winyah Rivers Foundation president Ronald Hartman said, “We all need to work together to protect the waters that we love and play in and we also drink. So it’s really to develop partners and raise awareness in our community about how we can use all those wonderful resources and also protect it for future generations.”
