MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Dozens of people walked around Broadway at the Beach on Saturday for the Out of the Darkness Community Walk.
The walk was put on by local American Foundation for Suicide Prevention volunteers. Event organizers say it’s a tough topic, but one they want to bring “out of the darkness.”
Participants wore customized buttons and placed pictures of loved ones in a memory area. They also wore honor beads with different colors to show their personal connection to the cause.
One of the volunteers, Alicia Armstrong, lost her grandmother to suicide five years ago and says this group has helped her heal.
“It really helped me heal to get into a community of people who also feel the same way I do,” said Armstrong. “I just think it’s a great cause because a lot of people turn a blind eye to these kinds of things.”
