Community members help their neighbors after Hurricane Matthew

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – It’s been a week since Hurricane Matthew hit the Carolinas and many people are still cleaning up. On Saturday, many people in Horry County came together to help each other out.

Anthony Hannon set up a free lunch at White Widow Games on Dick Pond Road with the help of volunteers and local restaurants. They gave out hundreds of hotdogs and hamburgers as well as pizza, Bojangles, desserts and drinks.

“We were without power for 5 days with our family,” said Hannon. “We know what everybody is going through out there and figured, you know, let’s get everybody out of the house, come out and, you know, feed them.” Several kids not only got a free lunch, but were also able to play in a game truck.

One of the volunteers, Trey Moore, comes to White Widow Games almost every weekend and was glad to be a part of Saturday’s event.

“We got hit pretty hard back in Georgetown,” said Moore. “It’s just really cool that someone as great as Anthony is doing something like this and it means a lot to us.” Over 400 people came to get a free, hot lunch from White Widow Games.

Across town the inaugural Myrtle Beach Seafood Festival also gave back to those affected by Hurricane Matthew. A portion of the money raised will go not only to the Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund but also to the Horry County Special Olympics.

“We’ve also asked folks today to donate bottled water and canned foods,” said festival organizer, Amie Lee. She said they will work with local non-profits to disperse the donations after the event.

Both of these events showed how people in our area want to give back to their neighbors who are struggling after the storm.

“It only feels right to give back,” added Hannon. “If you don’t give back then you’re not doing the right thing.”
