Community members gathered to give a helping hand to flooding victims in the Socastee area on Saturday.
Dozens of volunteers with several nonprofit organizations including the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities of South Carolina held a drive-through relief distribution at Forestbrook Middle School.
They gave away food, water, baby supplies, cleanup kits, and hygiene products. Around 100 people stopped by within the first hour of the giveaway, according to organizers. The distribution had enough items for 500 families.
“One vehicle drove through and said they were completely out of food. They just had no money to be able to replace the stuff that they lost, no money to buy the cleaning supplies needed. So they were thankful because this is making a difference. It’s offering them some hope,” said Angela Repass with the Salvation of Horry County.
The organizations will hold three more relief item distributions this week. The first will be on Monday in Conway at 603 16th Avenue. The next distributions will be in Conway on Wednesday and in Surfside Beach on Saturday.
