CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Monte Lee, who coached College of Charleston for seven seasons, has been hired as the new baseball coach at Clemson.

College of Charleston appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times under Lee, who had a 276-145 record at the school.

He replaces Jack Leggett, who won 955 games in 22 seasons while leading the Tigers to the College World Series six times. Leggett was fired June 4 after Clemson’s second straight 0-2 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Athletic director Dan Radakovich said Thursday he’s confident Lee will “create renewed momentum and optimism for Clemson baseball.”

The 38-year-old Lee led the Cougars to the super regionals in 2014, and this year’s team was 45-15 and reached the final of the Tallahassee Regional.
