Coastal wins rain-shortened series finale over Liberty

CONWAY – Coastal Carolina hit three home runs, including a grand slam by Connor Owings for his fourth round-tripper in the three-game series, to win a rain-shortened 12-1 series finale versus Liberty in five innings Monday afternoon. The Chanticleers improve to 34-16 overall and 16-5 in the Big South while Liberty falls to 31-19, 15-6.

After the final out of the fifth inning – at 3:01 pm, officials halted the game due to lightning in the area. Thirty minutes later, a severe thunderstorm forced the cancelation of the game. By NCAA rules, the game was an official contest since the teams played mandatory five innings.

Owings finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. For the three-game series, he was 6-for-12 with nine RBI, six runs scored and four home runs. (He hit a solo home run to tie the game 4-4 in a loss Friday, hit two, 2-run home runs on a 7-4 win Saturday and hit his first career grand slam in the win Monday.)

Also having a career day was freshman second baseman Seth Lancaster. The Hanahan product was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Zach Remillard and G.K Young each added two hits while Casey Schroeder had two RBI.

Coastal used three home runs to score its first seven runs of the game.

It was also announced Monday, due to weather and schedule impacts from this past weekend’s Tropical Storm Ana, the Coastal Carolina and Wake Forest baseball game scheduled for Tuesday, May 12 has been cancelled. The game will be not be made up this season.

Coastal Carolina will conclude the 2015 regular season with a three-game conference series at Campbell (Thursday May 14 at 6 pm – Friday May 15 at 4 pm – Saturday May 16 at 4:30 pm). The series finale on Saturday will be telecast by the American Sports Network.
