Conway, S.C. (WBTW) — The Coastal Carolina football team concluded its 2019 spring schedule Saturday afternoon by holding its annual Spring Game at Brooks Stadium.
The event lasted nearly two hours and pitted the Chanticleer offense against the defense in 60 minutes of game action that included a total of 19 series.
“I hope that everyone today saw us playing with passion and enthusiasm,” said head coach Jamey Chadwellafter the game. “We love to compete. Right now we’re building something special on the backs of the guys that came before us. We know this jump that we made is tough but we’re excited about going through the process to get where we need to get to. I told our guys today we wanted people to leave here knowing that we may make some mistakes, but we’re flying around and playing as hard as we can. We’re not going through the motions, we’re playing hard. Our guys were excited today and were definitely playing for each other.”
The first half of action included 12 offensive series, with freshmen quarterbacks Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter alternating reps with the first- and second-team offenses, respectively.
“I like both Fred and Bryce as our quarterbacks, I think we can win with both of them,” said Chadwell. “I think they’re both good leaders and they represent us well. We saw some good things from them today, as well as things we can improve on.”
The defense held strong in the first half, limiting the offense to a pair of touchdowns over its 12 opportunities.
Payton led a 65-yard touchdown drive on the first series of the day, completing two-of-four passes and capping the drive with a nine-yard touchdown rush. Sophomore running back Jacqez Hairston also rushed five times for 23 yards during the drive. Ky’Jon Tyler and T’Qele Holmes recorded the Chants’ receptions, going for eight and 11 yards, respectively.
The offense’s second touchdown came on the first play of the game’s fifth series. Carpenter hit Jaivon Heilighin stride on a deep pass and the freshman receiver took it the rest of the way for a 65-yard score.
The defense also featured prominently in the second half as the offense, led entirely by redshirt freshman quarterback Vic Colbert for the final 30 minutes, was held to one score.
Of the first five drives in the second half, two were ended by defensive fumble recoveries and three ended with sacks.
The offense broke through to the end zone on the second to last series of the game with Colbert hitting freshman tight end Patrick McSweeney for eight yards to finish off the drive. Freshman running back Tijuan Burroughs added a 21-yard run during that series to set up the touchdown.
