Atlanta, Ga. – The relentless Chanticleers scored a run in each of the eighth, ninth and 10th innings with substitute Morgan Hyde delivering a bases-loaded RBI single in the extra frame to propel Coastal Carolina to a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Georgia State Panthers in Sun Belt Conference play at the GSU Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The one-run win picks up the series win for the Chants, who will be going for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.

The Chants have won two-straight games and are 2-1-1 this season in extra-inning contests.

Hyde came up with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning to face new pitcher Rhett Harper. In his lone at-bat in the game, after entering the contest in the previous inning as a pinch runner, Hyde hit the first pitch through the left side of the infield to score Scott McKeon from third in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Hyde (1-for-1, RBI, SB) had the game-winning RBI in the 10th, while fellow first-year ChantJake Wright (3-for-4, BB, RBI, run) had the go-ahead RBI in the top of the ninth.

Parker Chavers (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs) scored the tying run in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch, while Cameron Pearcey (1-for-5, 3B, run, SB) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on Wright’s RBI single.

Senior Zach Biermann (3-for-5, RBI) drove in the other RBI in the win.

For the Panthers offensively, outfielder Luke Leonard (2-for-3, HR, BB, 2 RBIs, run) had the big solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings, while designated hitter Brandon Bell (2-for-5, 2 2B, RBI, run) and first baseman Ryan Glass (1-for-4, 2 RBI) combined to drive in the other three RBIs in the loss.

Sophomore Zach McCambley (6-2) held on for the win, as he pitched the final 4.2 innings of the contest after entering the game in the sixth with the bases loaded. McCambley gave up one earned run on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts in the relief win.

The loss fell to GSU closer Brandon Bell (0-2), as the righty gave up one run on one hit, one walk, two hit-batsmen and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.

The game started out as a pitcher’s duel, as both starting hurlers pitched out of trouble in the first three innings. Coastal’s Matt Eardensohn (5.1 IP, 4 hits, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) stranded two runners in both the second and third innings, while the CCU offense left two on in the third against GSU’s Hunter Gaddis (5.1 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER, BB, 6 K).

The Chants broke through first in the top of the fourth, as Wright led off the inning with a single to right field. After back-to-back fly outs and an ejection, freshman catcher Bradley Riopelle entered the game with a 2-1 count at the plate and then lined the second pitch he saw to center field to put runners on first and third with two outs.

Biermann came through with a clutch base hit with an RBI single to right center field to score Wright and put the men in black in front 1-0 midway through the fourth.

After Eardensohn got a 5-4-3 double-play to end the third, he sent down six-straight Panthers over the next two innings, highlighted by four strikeouts, to keep the Chants in front 1-0 through five innings of play.

Chavers quickly added to the Coastal lead in the top of the sixth, as the sophomore outfielder hit a two-run home run to center field, his team-high 11th home run of the season, to extend the lead to 3-0.

However, the Panthers would get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the sixth in a big way, scoring four runs in the frame, started by an RBI double off the wall in left field by Bell.

After a catcher’s interference call kept the inning alive, the Panthers took advantage with a bases-loaded RBI walk to Leonard and a two-out, two-run single to left field by Glass to push the home team in front at 4-3 with three innings to play.

Coastal stranded two Chants on base in the seventh before tying the score up at 4-4 in the eighth on a Chavers’ lead-off double, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch which allowed the Alabama native to stroll in from third.

McCambley settled down after the two-out RBI single by the Panthers in the sixth to send down seven-straight GSU Panther hitters to give the Chants’ offense a chance to win the game.

The relentless Chanticleers got a ninth-inning lead-off triple from Pearcey followed by an RBI single by Wright to give Coastal Carolina a late 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

Yet the Panthers refused to go away, as Leonard hit the very first pitch in the bottom of the ninth out of the stadium in left field to knot the game back up at 5-5 and send the game into extra innings.

A lead-off double from McKeon, a sacrifice bunt from Mike Koenig and back-to-back hit-by-pitches to Cory Wood and Pearcey set up Hyde for the game-winning hit.

McCambley shut the door in the 10th, as he pitched around a one-out double to leave the tying run on second in the one-run extra-inning win.

Coastal (26-17-1, 11-8 Sun Belt) and Georgia State (12-32, 3-17 Sun Belt) will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
