Coach mourns SC high school football player’s drowning death

DUNCAN, SC  – An Upstate community is mourning the loss of a local student.

Markell Nesbitt, a student at Byrnes High School, drowned at Lyman Lake while he was swimming with friends yesterday.

Brian Lane, the head football coach at Byrnes High School, says football practice Tuesday morning was extremely emotional for the players and coaches.

Players and coaches came together Monday night after they heard about Markell’s tragic death. They got the chance to talk about their memories of Markell, and his impact on the team.

Coach Lane says Markell was a standout athlete on the track and football teams, and was on his way to making headlines this fall.

Friends and coaches say they will always remember Markell’s infectious smile, and his love for his teammates and classmates.

Grief counselors have been brought in this week for football players to talk with before and after practice.

A Gofundme has been set up for Markell for donations.
