MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium is now one step closer to being restored to its former glory. The city of Myrtle Beach is now officially accepting bids from contractors for the historic stadium’s renovation.
The Horry County School District is funding the project along with the City of Myrtle Beach, since Myrtle Beach High School . Together, they expect to spend approximately $6.6 million on the project. Of that amount, the city will be responsible for a little over $4.5 million, while the school district will cover the remaining $2 million. The renovation includes improvements to the seating, locker rooms, press box, and concession stands. However, contractors in Myrtle Beach are currently facing less competition, and therefore could submit quotes that exceed the project budget. Still, Myrtle Beach city officials such as Public Information Director Mark Kruea don’t expect the budget to prevent them from starting the project in January as planned.
“If the bids come in high we can work with the low bidder and see where we can cut, we can change the shape of the project, say we don’t need this or scale things back to save some money.”
Myrtle Beach City Councilman Wayne Gray echoed Kruea’s sentiment, saying, “We think we allocated a significant amount of money to try and deal with the price escalation. If there is a bid that’s over budget, we can look at how do we shave some of the items off the project or allocating more money.”
The next step in the search for a contractor is a mandatory pre-bid meeting on Monday, December 12th, at the stadium.
