LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – The City of Lumberton is planning to spend $2 million to address failing drainage systems at Rosewood Mobile Home Park.

Lumberton City Manager Wayne Horne says residents recently spoke up about the sewage problems, which prompted the city to act. After examining the area and assessing the problem, city officials talked with the health department and came up with the plan to fix the sewage system.

“When the septic tanks start failing then you have groundwater contamination or the tank’s not working then the area around it becomes contaminated. And it becomes a health issue,” said Horne.

According to Horne, a sewage system was not extended to Rosewood when it was built back in the 1970s. Through the state’s Community Development Block Grant program for low-income families, city leaders applied for the grant to build sewer pipes, a pumping station, and sewer taps.

The total grant amount is $1,997,000 and the park’s owner is contributing an additional $25,000.

Residents of Rosewood say the grant is a major step in the right direction for them and they’re looking foward to seeing how it will benefit the community.

“We were excited about it because the roads will be fixed, it’ll upgrade the mobile home park to a better place to live,” said Chavis.

Construction of this project is expected to begin in about 6 months. It will take 6 to 8 months after that before it’s complete.
