FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – The Florence City Council voted on Monday to move forward with an affordable housing deal between the city and the Florence Affordable Housing Corporation.
In 2009 and 2011, the city received $2.3 million from the federal government to revitalize housing units throughout Florence. Now, they’re giving those houses to the Florence Affordable Housing Corporation to rent out for about $500 to $800 a month.
Since receiving the money, the city has bought several foreclosed houses with the top priority of preventing the decay of neighborhoods. They’ve been renting out the houses but are now giving the units to the Florence Affordable Housing Corporation, which has a development agreement with the state.
“They currently have about four properties through the neighborhood stabilization program and now they will receive these 6 units. And again, they will have to maintain those units as affordable housing units just as the city has done,” said the city’s director of general services Scotty Davis.
The second hearing on this item will be held in June. Between now and then, the city council and the Florence Affording Housing Corporation will meet to discuss the transfer of the properties.
