DARLINGTON, S.C. (WBTW) – People living in Darlington could soon see a slight increase in their water bills.
Darlington Water and Sewer proposed a $2 water rate increase starting in the new fiscal year followed by a 3% increase in each of the next five years.
Right now, people in Darlington are paying less for water than 75% of South Carolinians.
The Water and Sewer Department says if the rate increase isn’t approved, state officials may deny grand money in the future. City officials say rates haven’t increased in over three years.
City Council will hear the first reading of the ordinance next week.
The Mayor says she hopes the hike is a step in the right direction, ensuring the city can afford to fix other problems like stormwater drainage especially after last fall’s floods.Count on News 13 for coverage as Council considers the rate increase.
