FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Saint Paul United Methodist Church is celebrating 70 years of service and ministry in Florence.

The church turned 70 years old on July 4th. It hosted has anniversary festivities all weekend long, including a barbecue chicken dinner and family field day on Saturday and a worship service and luncheon on Sunday. Pastor Debra Armstrong told News13 that the church was started by its mother church, Central United Methodist Church.

“They decided they needed a church on this side of town. So 70 years ago, they started holding barbecues to raise money. They had to stop for World War Two but then after World War Two, they built Saint Paul united Methodist Church. And we’ve been in ministry serving The Lord ever since,” she said.

We also spoke with one youth member, Jonah Harding, who has been attending the church since he was a baby. Harding talked to us about what he enjoys most about the church.

“It’s about the people that I’ve met during the church. It’s just I’ve met a lot of nice people. A lot of people that have had an impact on my life and I’m just glad to be here,” he said. Harding also told us he is ecstatic that the church has been around for 70 years and he hopes to see it continue to grow within the next 70 years.
