ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – An Orangeburg County man is in custody after an argument over child safety turned fatal at a boat landing over the holiday weekend.
Luther Brandell Green, 30, is facing a charge of murder after he was taken into custody following the fatal shooting of a Sumter man.
“This was truly a senseless act of violence,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said. “Cooler heads should have prevailed but obviously this got way out of hand. It’s just tragic. One life has been taken and another life destroyed by this single act.”
Warrants have also been obtained against Kimberly Young, 25, of Ridgeland, who is being charged with obstruction and accessory after the fact of a felony.
The shooting took place at Indian Bluff, a public boat landing and recreational area located about five miles east of Santee.
Green is expected to make his first court appearance at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Orangeburg County Law Enforcement Complex on Ellis Avenue.
Adrian Eaglin, 20, of Rangler Trail, was declared dead at the scene. The Sumter man suffered at least one gunshot wound to the torso.
An autopsy on Eaglin is scheduled for Tuesday in Newberry.
Witnesses told OCSO investigators there had been arguments most of Sunday over what they said was a personal watercraft being operated close to shore where several children were playing. Witnesses said Green was a passenger on the watercraft.
Around 4 p.m. the argument “flared up again,” according to the incident report. Witnesses said that when the two men got into a physical altercation, Eaglin was shot at close range.
Green was taken into custody a short while later at a Santee hotel. A revolver recovered in Green’s room is being tested to determine if it was used in the shooting.
Young’s charges originated when investigators attempted to locate Green in Santee. A woman at Green’s hotel room said she didn’t know who Green was when investigators asked.
