BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Charges have been upgraded against the man accused of causing a car crash in Marlboro County that killed a school bus driver Wednesday afternoon.
Cpl. Sonny Collins, spokesman for the South Carolina Highway Patrol, says the accident happened at the intersection of Ebenezer Road and Hickory Grove Road.
Cpl. Collins says a car ran a stop sign and hit a pickup truck. He says that caused the pickup truck to cross the center line of the road and strike a school bus. Investigators say the car that caused the crash left the scene, but the driver was later located.
Zachary Hunt, 23, of Marlboro County, was arrested in connection to the accident. Hunt was originally charged with leaving the scene of a collision, driving under suspension and disregarding a stop sign. The driver of the school bus was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, but later died from injuries sustained during the crash, confirms Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown.
Hunts charges were upgraded Thursday following the bus driver’s death. Hunt is now charged with hit-and-run involving death and reckless homicide, reports Cpl. Collins.
Brown identifies the victim as Horace Little, Jr., 69, of Wallace. Little died at McLeod Regional Wednesday evening.
No students were on board the school bus at the time of the accident.
