CONWAY –

Anna Vogt’s career-best scoring effort of 25 points was not enough to propel the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team to victory Tuesday night at The HTC Center as the No. 9 Chanticleers fell 68-54 to the eighth-seeded UNC Asheville Bulldogs in the first round of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women’s Basketball Championship.

Vogt’s point total was the fourth-highest in a first round tournament game, and the junior forward set a first round record shooting 76.9 percent (10-13) from the field. She was also a perfect 5-5 from the line, pulled in three rebounds, dished out two assists and tallied one steal.

Coastal closes its second season under head coach Jaida Williams with a 12-18 overall record, including a 6-14 mark against Big South opponents.

With the win, UNC Asheville (9-21, 8-13) advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal round where the Bulldogs will meet the top-seeded Liberty Flames.

First team All-Big South performer

AJ Jordan

added 14 points and a game-high nine boards in the final contest of her brilliant career that saw her become Coastal’s all-time record holder for most games played (118) in a Chanticleer uniform.

Asheville freshman guard

Khaila Webb

set a career high for the second straight game with her team-high 16 points on 7-of-8 from the field. Teammate

Tianna Knuckles

scored 10 of her 14 points after halftime for the Bulldogs, who improve to 3-0 versus Coastal Carolina this season.

“UNC Asheville played a great game tonight,” said Williams after the game. “We went over game situations before our practices, but we just allowed them to speed us up and we didn’t do a great job of boxing out in the closing minutes.”

“I also want to say congratulations and thank you to AJ Jordan for her contributions to the program and to Coastal Carolina University. She has represented the team and class well and I know she will go on to do great things as a coach and her career in her next chapter.”
