Conway, SC (WBTW) — Coastal Carolina baseball jumped out to a 3-0 lead early but gave up two big innings late in the contest to fall at home to the College of Charleston 13-6 on Tuesday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

The loss is the third-straight for the Chanticleers, matching its longest losing streak of the season.

Coastal’s offense was held to just seven base hits on the night, highlighted by two base hits from senior outfielder Cameron Pearcey (2-for-4, RBI, run). Junior Cory Wood (1-for-5, RBI, run, SB), redshirt sophomore Jake Wright (1-for-2, 2B, BB, run), senior Mike Koenig(1-for-3, 2B, RBI), senior Kieton Rivers (1-for-4, BB) and junior Scott McKeon (1-for-4, run) all had a base hit in the loss.

College of Charleston scored 13 runs on 20 base hits led by a pair of home runs from catcher Danny Wondrack (3-for-6, 2 HR, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) and four base hits from Chris Graham (4-for-5, 2B, 3 RBIs, 3 runs).

The loss fell to CCU’s Trevor Damron (2-1), as the left-handed relief pitcher gave up four runs, three of which were earned, on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 0.2 innings out of the bullpen.

The win went to CofC’s Zach Williams (2-3), as the lefty held the Chants to just three runs, two earned, on three hits, two walks and three strikeouts over 5.0 innings out of the Cougars’ bullpen.

Playing at home for the first time this month, the Chants took an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly from Zach Biermann, and then one more run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Koenig.

However, the Cougars would score the next five runs of the game on an RBI single from Graham in the fourth, a two-run home run from Wondrack in the fifth and two more runs on a Dupree Hart two-run single in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom half of the sixth.

CCU retook the lead in the bottom half of the sixth, as Wood singled off the pitcher’s back foot to score McKeon from third and then forced a throwing error from the catcher when stealing second base to allow Bradley Riopelle to score and tie the game up at 5-5.

Pearcey then drove in Wood from third, who advanced on the throwing error, to score the go-ahead run and put the home team in front 6-5 with three innings to play.

CofC would answer with a four-spot in the seventh, led off by a solo home run to left field from Wondrack, to retake the lead for good at 9-6.

Coastal went down in order in the seventh and eighth, before the Cougars scored four more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach in the 13-6 non-conference win.

The Chants stranded eight runners on base, while the Cougars stranded 10 runners on.

Coastal (23-14-1, 8-6 Sun Belt) will continue its four-game home-stand on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 18-20, versus Georgia Southern (21-16, 8-7 Sun Belt) in a key Sun Belt Conference series. Thursday’s first pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET.
