SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (AP) – An administrative law judge will hear a challenge to plans to build 21 houses on Sunset Beach property so fragile that federal regulations prohibit public utility connections.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports a ruling made public Monday by the vice chairwoman of the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission allows a challenge to the state permit for the Sunset West project.
The Sunset Beach Taxpayers Association and the N.C. Coastal Federation are challenging the development.
Developer Sammy Varnam earlier told The StarNews of Wilmington that the challenge is ridiculous because opponents had plenty of time to speak up during the public comment period. Numerous state and local agencies have reviewed the project.
The 21 eight-bedroom houses would be built on 15 acres of a 25-acre property.
