CCU suspect in custody threatened to “go on a shooting spree”

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Coastal Carolina University says one suspect is in custody after warning students about possible dangerous person near campus.

Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County police says officers responded to a domestic violence call around noon Monday on Augusta Plantation Drive. The caller told police her husband was “angry about his daughter’s problems with roommates at the university, armed himself, and left the home threatening to ‘go on a shooting spree’ at the university,” Denis says.

The report from Horry County police says the argument began after the victim wouldn’t tell the suspect the name of the daughter’s roommates. After the argument, the man retrieved two handguns from his night stand and when the victim wouldn’t tell him the names, he pushed her on the bed and held a loaded, cocked, silver handgun to her right cheek and said he was going to the school.

According to the report, all the events happened in front a 10-month- old baby.

Campus police were alerted immediately and support units from the Horry County Police Department and the Conway Police Department responded to saturate the area.

According to police, Richard Adams, 37, of Myrtle Beach, surrendered to police at the North Myrtle Beach Police Department around 2 p.m.

A release from spokesperson Pat Dowling with the City of North Myrtle Beach says the suspect turned himself in at the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety building. Dowling says the man arrived in the parking lot and was held there until Horry County police arrived.

CCU released on their Facebook page that police had one person in custody just after 2 p.m.

“Please return to normal activities. We thank the campus community for your patience and vigilance,” CCU said in a Facebook post.

According to a statement from Coastal Carolina University, Horry County Police were looking for a white male in a Silver Kia Sorrento with SC license plate 59342W. Representatives of the university said he was considered a dangerous suspect and could be near campus. The suspect is described as a white male, 37 years old, 6’3, 220 pounds with reddish brown hair and beard.
