Coastal Carolina University has again partnered with United Way for its Caring for Kindergartners program coming up on April 9.
CCU student athletes will read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein to kindergartners in 118 classes in 24 schools across Horry County. It’s a way for the athletes to show the kindergartners they care about them. The kindergartners will then pay it forward by decorating cards that will be delivered to Horry County’s homebound, mostly the elderly, who receive home-delivered meals.
“This unique opportunity for college students and kindergartners to interact and learn from each other is treasured by both groups. We are so grateful to all involved who make this special day happen year after year,” said United Way of Horry County President Genie Sherard.
The book, The Giving Tree, is about a tree that gives every piece of itself to a boy throughout their lifetimes. The hope is the kindergartners will see the giving nature of the student athletes and learn the importance of consideration of others.
“The Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics is proud to continue its partnership with The United Way of Horry County by participating in the Caring for Kindergartners Program. The program has allowed for a positive impact, not only with area kindergartners but also among student-athletes, coaches, and staff. We look forward to spreading the message of The Giving Tree to all,” said CCU Associate Athletic Director Cari Rosiek.
This is the 13th year for the Caring for Kindergartners program.
