CONWAY, SC (AP) – The Atlantic hurricane season is rapidly approaching and Coastal Carolina University researchers predict a below normal season.
The forecast released Monday based on the university’s HUGO model says the most likely scenario for the upcoming season is that no hurricanes will make landfall either on the East Coast or the Gulf coast.
The forecast gives a range of storms, but it predicts there most likely will be eight named tropical storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes.
The model’s name stands for Hurricane Genesis and Outlook. It’s named after Hurricane Hugo which smashed the South Carolina coast in 1989.
Last year the model forecast predicted there would be between zero and two hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. coast. There was one.
Hurricane season begins June 1.
