CONWAY – Coastal Carolina was down 3-0 early before scoring runs each of its final six innings – including six in a decisive fifth inning – to claim a 16-4 victory over Gardner-Webb Friday.
The Chanticleers (18-9, 3-1 Big South) have won 11 of their last 13. Gardner-Webb falls to 21-8, 2-2 in the league. The teams will play game two of the weekend series Saturday at 2 pm.
Michael Paez led Coastal Carolina at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI and a two-run home run. Anthony Marks, G.K. Young, Zach Remillard, Connor Owings and Matt Beaird each contributed two hits.
