CONWAY, SC-    South Carolina law provides tuition exemption for residents 60 and older to classes at state colleges. Coastal Carolina University offers courses it they’re available and if the student doesn’t have a full-time job.

Barbara Streeter majored in Accounting decades ago, but this time around she’s chosen to follow her passion. Streeter is 62 years-old and pursuing a degree in Studio Art.

“These classes are much more interesting than accounting classes,” said Streeter.

She’s currently enrolled as a part-time student and expects to finish her degree in 2017. Aside from saving money, Streeter said college is less stressful.

“I have more time to study now,” she said. “I have more time to dedicate to my classes.”

Sophomore Rebecca Key said it’s a little odd to see people in their golden years walking around campus, but it’s also inspiring.

“It really just goes to show at any age you can expand your mind and you’re never done learning,” said Key.

Streeter said she thinks it’s a great idea for the state to offer free tuition to senior citizens because people are living longer, and it allows them to make the most of it.

“I hope to be working well into my 80’s,” stated Streeter.

Senior citizens that wish to enroll at CCU must apply and fill out a free tuition application.
