OMAHA, NE (WBTW) It’s just over 1,300 miles from Conway to Omaha. That lengthy journey to the Midwest didn’t stop many Coastal Carolina fans from joining their team for their first trip to the College World Series.
While the sound of school spirit rings out from Gauchos to Red Raiders and Horned Frogs to “The U”, you’ll also find the teal colors from Horry County. The school from Conway has waited a log time to be on that CWS signage.
“Well as soon as it happened we were like man we gotta go this is crazy” CCU Student Cody Weiskircher said. “It’s cool, it’s a neat experience to be here in Omaha.”
Hes not alone either.
“It’s awesome being down here, the whole experience is great,” CCU Student and Myrtle Beach native Liam Guinam said.
They may not be the biggest fan base but Liam says seeing other people in Coastal gear means instant friends.
“I’ve seen a couple shirts and stuff and we’ll be like hey what’s up,” Guinam said.
It’s not just people from the Palmetto State cheering for Coastal, the Chanticleers are quickly rearing a rooting section from the non-partisan crowd in Omaha.
“You’re kind of the underdog, the Cinderella team, first time here,” Omaha native Pat McPherson said of why he’s cheering for CCU
A logo on the scoreboard is a beautiful backdrop to this batting practice. One equally exciting for both the players on the field and those who root loudly from the stands.
Coastal Carolina opens the College World Series with a game against the #1 seed Florida Gators. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. eastern time Sunday Night from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska. Count on coverage from News13 throughout the Chanticleers entire run through the CWS.
