EFFINGHAM, SC: Teachers at Carver Elementary took a group of their students to 301 Deer Processing and Taxidermy shop Friday.
Students learned about the outdoors and animals that some have never seen up close.
“We asked if we could come have some hands on with the different animals and have the owner talk to us and explain different wildlife,” said Special Ed. teacher Whitney Harris.
Harris says the students have been learning about different animals, their habitats and characteristics. The field trip gives the students experience out of the classroom. The students were really excited to get to feel the alligators and different animal furs.
Business owner Steve Drummond educated the students on wildlife. He says that it’s exciting for him to show kids the joy of the outdoors.
“If you don’t teach a kid nothing about the outdoors, then he is not going to want to be in the outdoors. He is going to want to be behind a video game or either in front of a television,” said Drummond.
He says there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors without having to harvest animals. You can bird watch, look at the animals or go fishing. If you don’t wish to keep the fish just catch it and turn it loose.
Before the students ended their day, they all got a cookout and each got their own alligator tooth necklace.
