COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The National Weather Service is conducting statewide tornado drills in North and South Carolina this month.

North Carolina’s drill is set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The weather service is asking schools, businesses and families to participate.

South Carolina’s drill is scheduled for March 11.

The weather service says the drill is being broadcast over the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radio station and its emergency alert system. The weather service says most NOAA radio receivers won’t make an audible alert sound and will instead show a blinking light.

They suggest participants develop a severe weather plan and practice seeking shelter as if a tornado were heading their way.
