Carolina Forest High School’s FIRST Robotics Team, Robo-Katz, won the Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Tournament on Saturday taking them to the national championship in St. Louis in April.

The other two teams in the Robo-Katz’ winning alliances were from Laurens, South Carolina and Knoxville, Tennessee.

66 teams of students from 8 states and Canada came together for the tournament  held in Myrtle Beach’s Convention center where this year’s challenge was Recycle Rush.

In the Recycle Rush challenge, students received a computer and a kit of parts in early January, and then had just six weeks to build a working robot from scratch.

In addition to Carolina Forest, three other Horry County high school teams were in the top 24 for Saturday afternoon’s playoffs.

Conway High School’s Robo Tigers were in the top eight, and they selected the Academy for Technology and Academics (Team Volt) and the Academy for Arts, Science and Technology (Aluminum Assault) for their alliance.
