Car trapped under tanker closes main Charleston bridge for 8 hours

Tuesday evening around 7:50 p.m. officials re-opened the all lanes of the Ravenel bridge after a traffic accident Tuesday morning closed the bridge for hours.   

Officials re-opened the southbound lanes around 7:20 p.m. but could not re-open the northbound lanes at that time due to fuel still on the roadway.

Late Tuesday afternoon authorities completed transferring fuel from a tanker truck damaged in an accident Tuesday morning that closed the Ravenel bridge for hours.

An accident involving a black sedan and a tanker shut down all lanes headed northbound on the Ravenel Bridge Tuesday morning just before noon.

Police tell News 2 the driver of the sedan sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Charleston Police Department tweeted: “sedan & tanker truck accident Ravenel Bridge truck leaking diesel fuel fire dept on scene DHEC on its way NB lanes shut down” at 11:24 A.M. on Tuesday.

They also posted “pedestrian lane shut down accident involving sedan & tanker truck, truck carrying diesel fuel which it is leaking NB lanes shutdown.”
