Grand Strand businesses are working with Champion Autism Network to make it easier for families with autism to hit the town.

While lunch outings or trips to local attractions may be easy for most families, Champion Autism Network Executive Director Becky Large says it can be harder for families with autism.

“There might be some awkward social behavior, some communication issues. It’s possible that the person with autism can become overstimulated and they may have to wrap the food before it’s even served,” said Large.

She hopes the new CAN card program will make going out a smoother experience for families with autism. If someone in your family has autism, all you have to do is present the CAN card when you go to participating businesses, including the Skywheel, Johnny D’s Waffles and Bakery, or Hamburger Joe’s, and employees will help accommodate your needs. Families will also be able to receive discounts or cut to the front of lines at some locations.

“They will know where to seat you. Probably in a quieter area, maybe in a booth. The server will know, everyone in the restaurant is alerted to the fact that we have a family with autism,” Large said.

“It makes it a lot easier for the simple fact that we know these restaurants are autism friendly. We know that we won’t be judged or looked at differently,” said Regina Glazer, who’s son has autism.

For Jellie Bellie and Company in Surfside Beach, becoming an autism-friendly business is a cause that hits close to home. Manager Hailey Shetler has a cousin her own age with autism.

“There are good days and there are bad days. Some days there’s aggression. Some days there’s happiness. Some days parents get so tired that they’re not sure what to do,” said Shetler.

Jellie Bellie offers private seating for any families who come in with the CAN card. It will also donate 10% of its profits on April 11th from 11 AM to 8 PM to the CAN Film Festival.

“I know how hard it is for families to be able to find a place that really suits them. And here we try to make it comfortable for everybody,” said Shetler.
