COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTW)- Three South Carolina state departments have teamed up to launch a campaign aimed to reduce the amount of food we throw away.

Campaign leaders of Don’t Waste Food SC say that one out of six people struggle with hunger in the US but food waste is the number one component being sent to landfills.

Don’t Waste Food SC is aimed at providing education and empowering people to take action by preventing, donating or composting surplus food.  The goal of the campaign is to reduce food waste in the state by 50 percent by 2030.

Governor Nikki Haley proclaimed July 13, 2016 as “Don’t Waste Food SC Day” as the campaign gains momentum and invites South Carolinians to join the effort.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, S.C. Department of Commerce and S.C. Department of Agriculture are all sponsors of the effort.  The project also has received support from private partners including the Harvest Hope Food Bank, Re-Soil and Loaves and Fishes.
