Bond was set at $10,000 on Wednesday for a woman charged in a Florence hit-and-run that killed a 22-year-old.
Canty’s parents offered their condolences to the Johnson family and said this has been a very difficult time for everyone involved.
“I know that this wasn’t intentional. If she knew that she hit someone, she would’ve stopped and she would’ve done the right thing,” said Canty’s mother.
Troopers say 21-year-old Nailani Canty was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.
“If she would’ve stopped and called the police, I would feel a little bit different. If you would’ve turned yourself in, I would feel a little bit different, but you decided not to do neither of those things,” said Johnson’s father.
The incident happened Sunday morning when Tyshon Johnson, of Timmonsville, was walking along West Palmetto Street. Officials say he was struck by a car. He died at the scene.
“She didn’t know that she hit a human. Even when we’re going down the road and there’s an animal in the road and it’s already been hit, she doesnt’t even want to go over the animal. So I know she wouldn’t have done that,” said Canty’s mother.
Canty’s next hearing has been set for July 17. She is pregnant and expecting a child on April 12, according to her family. She had recently moved to Florence to live with her boyfriend, a member of her family said
“I’m just asking for a little leniency towards that,” said Canty’s mother.
