An Horry County judge has issued a $10,000 bond for the woman police say put her newborn baby girl in a bag of trash on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the mother of the child, 23-year-old Shelby Harper Taylor, surrendered to police after seeing herself on TV Thursday evening.

Once police interviewed Ms. Taylor, they found she had complications from giving birth and took her to a local hospital. Lt. Raul Denis with the Horry County Police Department says doctors released Taylor on Saturday morning.

She has been booked at the County Detention Center and charged with one count of attempted murder in the case. In her bond hearing, the judge also said Taylor could not have any contact with children without permission.

Taylor’s next court appearance is June 19.

The baby, who was at a dumpster in the Island Green subdivision off SC 707, is “doing well and being cared for at a local hospital,” DSS officials said Friday afternoon.

The Department of Social Services is working with local law enforcement and the family to determine “an appropriate placement for the baby,” officials said.

“Moving forward, DSS will continue to assess the safety and well-being of the child and the family and provide services as necessary,” officials said in a press release.

Police say the newborn infant had been thrown into a dumpster and only located after a man heard noises coming from a nearby dumpster when he took out his trash. According to the police report, the man thought the noises were from an animal but upon further investigation discovered the baby girl.

Police were called at 2:35 pm Thursday to investigate the scene in the 500 block of Fairway Village Drive.

The mother of the baby girl had just given birth and the baby was then tossed into a dumpster in the area, said Lt. Raul Denis of the Horry County Police.

The baby girl, which still had an umbilical cord attached, was estimated to be just a few hours old, said Sgt. Kent Donald of the Horry County Police. According to the police report, the baby was covered in blood and afterbirth. Police took the baby to Waccamaw Medical Center where she was given immediate medical attention.

Police said the baby weighed eight pounds and six ounces.

A man, Austin Detray, who discovered the baby was taking out trash and heard a faint sound that he thought was a kitten or cat. Detray waited for a few moments and heard the sound again.

Detray and 2 of his family members then discovered the baby inside a bag of trash in the dumpster, officials told News13.

“We just leaned (the baby) on its side .. You know, it still had mucus in its system, and it was still puking up stuff. Still had the umbilical cord attached to it, and we just stayed by its side and waited for the ambulance to come,” Detray told News13.
