A 21-year-old Longs man has been charged with murder 5 days after a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in the face, Horry County Police say.

Rodrez Daquell Stanley, of Longs, SC, was initially wanted as a person of interest in the Friday night death of Taizaun Dewitt, Horry County Police said.

Stanley surrendered to authorities on Tuesday and was held at the Horry County Detention Center on an unrelated bench warrant.

On Wednesday afternoon, Stanley was charged with murder in the death of Taizaun, said Lt. Raul Denis of the Horry County Police.

Thursday morning, Stanley was denied bond in a hearing with a magistrate judge.

The shooting happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday at a house in the Poplar area in Longs, police said.

A woman — who drove Taizaun to the hospital — told police she heard a gunshot as she was driving home from work on Pint Circle near the IGA store, according to an Horry County Police report.

The woman then spotted a person who turned out to be Taizaun walk from the house, down the right side of the road and then he collapsed, the police report said.

The woman, who grew up in the area, noticed several people running from the area and recognized Taizaun, the report said. She put him in her car and drove him to the hospital.

Police were later told that Taizaun was shot just under his left eye and doctors could not find an exit wound for the bullet, the police report said.

Minutes after the shooting, officers were notified that a teen had been shot and was being transported to Seacoast Medical Center in Little River.

Police arrived and were immediately informed that the 14-year-old died from the gunshot wound.

Several detectives were dispatched immediately and they were able to determine that the shooting took place at a house in the 2800 block of Collins Circle, Denis said.
